Exploring Liquid Charcoal: Adding Color – An Online Visual Art Workshop with Veteran Artist Shaun Smith

Exploring Liquid Charcoal: Adding Color
In March & April, Veteran Artist Shaun Smith introduced us to the medium of liquid charcoal, and how white charcoal & gouache can bring out the artwork’s highlights. In this final workshop featuring liquid charcoal, Shaun will show participants how color can be added to the medium. Together, we will explore the different methods & mediums to colorize our liquid charcoal paintings. Join us virtually and follow along, or just hang out with other community members while you work on whatever art project you’d like. All are welcome and no experience is necessary.
Suggested Supplies:
- Charcoal Paint
- Watercolor paint
- Brushes
- Water container
- Paper towels
- Watercolor or mixed medium paper
- Masking tape
Other Optional Supplies include:
- White gel pen or white charcoal
- Pastels
- Guache
- Colored pencils
- Or bring any other medium you want to experiment with.
Shaun Smith is a Retired U.S. Army Veteran and Fine Artist based in Northern Maine. Shaun served 10 years as a Combat Medic with a tour in Afghanistan. During that time he was awarded The Combat Medic Badge for providing care under fire and a Purple Heart for injuries sustained from a VBIED. Shaun found comfort in art therapy as a way to express his experiences, leading him to enroll into an art university. Shaun graduated from The Academy of Art University of San Francisco with a Bachelors in Fine art Painting in 2021. Shaun dedicates his time to painting landscapes, wildlife, and peaceful moments.

When I paint a scene or a subject, That’s the only thing that matters in that moment and I get to meditate on that beauty.”
